First lecture of 2016, thank you Sister Petra Clare!

The Society has replaced its usual sequence of evening Spring Lectures with a programme of Afternoon Lectures at The Trinity Centre, where our successful series of Artist Demos organised by our Treasurer, Rob Leckey, continue to run.

The afternoon of Wednesday 30th March saw nearly 50 members and friends gathering for the first of these new style lectures, on this occasion to be given by Sister Petra Clare, a well established local iconographer, based in her studio at the English Bridge Workshop in Shrewsbury.

A member of the Greek Orthodox Church and a native of Cardington, in her early years she was a student at Shrewsbury School of Art. She told of her development as an artist and how she came to be working in this specialist area of the Art world. She explained the nature of the icon, its history and the religious ideas it embodies, demonstrating with many examples, some of the traditional techniques involved in its creation. We were particularly impressed with the great energy and liveliness created in the full sized figures in her drawings, in spite of the constraints of the icon format. The lecture concluded with examples of various bespoke icons designed and created in a very site-specific way by our speaker, as commissions for many churches across the UK. There were opportunities for questions and, during the break for refreshments, a chance to examine close up a number of examples on display.

Sister Petra Clare was warmly thanked for an interesting and informative afternoon.

Leeds, York and Harrogate: our 2016 spring adventure!

An almost full coach of SAS members and friends set off on Friday 13th March for our annual Gallery Weekend. This was to see us based at the very comfortable Queens Hotel, situated in Leeds city centre. Packing in as much as possible, our first destination on the journey north was the impressive Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield. This striking building was designed specifically to house a substantial collection of the sculptor’s work, alongside an exhibition explaining her creative processes. A great start to the weekend!

Saturday offered the opportunity to explore the riches of the vibrant and spacious city of Leeds itself, a revelation to those who last visited some 30 plus years ago! Sunday saw us in York with opportunities to visit York Minster, the Railway and Castle museums, its medieval buildings, and eat and shop in the quirky Shambles district, as well as to walk sections of the famous walls in afternoon sunshine.

With the weather remaining kind, Monday, our final day was spent in and around Harrogate. This was looking its usual immaculate self with large blocks of crocus decorating the famous Stray which brings substantial green spaces right into the centre of the town. The gardeners amongst us enjoyed several hours exploring the splendid RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr, just outside the town, again blessed with dry and sunny weather. Having sampled for the final time the delights of Betty’s Tearooms, we boarded our Longmynd coach for a smooth ride home, well satisfied with our visit to Yorkshire.

Thanks go to all who helped in various ways to make it another very enjoyable Gallery Weekend, especially to Alan Townsend whose hard work behind the scenes makes these trips possible. Watch this space for future adventures!

2015 Classes and Workshops end with a flourish!

After the earlier excellent classes by Judith Moy and Lynne Morgan, our 2015 season of Classes and Workshops ended with a flourish. The final Printing Workshop ably led by Suki White was well attended and enjoyed by all, while the final session of Euryl’s sequence of Wednesday Classes provided a great climax to the exploration of colour, through which she had led us in her challenging but encouraging way.

The final Saturday Workshop of the term, focusing on the father and son pair of Aneurin and Meirion Jones, provided an exciting day for a Studio full of members. Two Trustees visiting from the English Bridge Workshop Management Committee were impressed by the number of members participating, the excellent working atmosphere and the quality of the work being produced. Many thanks to Lynne and Mick for all their hard work and imagination in making this such a popular activity in our annual programme.

Lovely lunch sees us looking ahead to 2016

A very successful annual Society pre-Christmas lunch was held at the pleasantly situated and welcoming Riverside Inn near Cound. Some 40 members of the Society enjoyed each other’s company and what was agreed by all, to be a delicious meal, served in welcoming surroundings. Blessed with dry weather for our arrival and departure, we all marvelled at the River Severn in full spate, swiftly spreading across the fields to create a huge lake. Ark building might have been on some minds, but we stayed on over coffee for a few words of welcome and thanks to those members present for such good support, from our organiser (Alan Townsend) and his able helper Wilf our Chairman, supported by his wife Jean. All left in good spirits, looking forward to the Society’s programme for the year ahead.

Autumn Exhibition 2015 a winner!

We are pleased to confirm that the Shropshire Art Society Autumn Exhibition Reg Harrison & Harold Walker Memorial Salver Award has been awarded to Judith Moy for ‘Wildmoor Pool – the Longmynd’, the picture that best reflects the Shropshire countryside. Congratulations Judith! The Award was presented to Judith’s friend Sheila Sharpe by Jane Townsend on Saturday 8th at our Exhibition Social. A very happy occasion which celebrated all the artists whose work has made the exhibition such a great success.
